Hey guys,

I haven't written any journals in a while due to college assignments and life. But I thought I would just write a short journal about a really amazing thing happening a few months ago. I received an email from Joann Hill who is the art director of Disney/Hyperion publishing, and she said that they wanted to buy the rights from my 'Prophecy of 7' painting.
Apparently they saw this edit of my painting, in which someone has slapped on the title 'Blood of Olympus' and they now wanted to use it for a poster accompanying the final book to sold in select stores like Walmart.

You can see Rick's post on Tumblr regarding the case here :…

Anyway, I still can't believe it to this day, and I'm just so happy that I can take part in the Percy Jackson series however little. I just feel so honoured and blessed and I want to thank all my followers who have been very supportive of my work. Thank you all so much!

Hey guys, I have a design assignment about Japanese Haikus, and I chose this one :

Spring rain
under trees
A crystal stream

We have to find the meanings of the haiku, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I tried browsing in books, but they weren't really helpful either. What do you think it means? Maybe any of you know what it actually means? I'd really appreciate it if you tell me in the comments below. Please guys, I really need your help. Thank you so much!

Thanks to Falcrow-42 for notifying me about this by note :

Hi guys! I hope you guys are having a nice holiday. I haven't written or posted anything on my deviantART for a while now, and I apologize for that. I want to thank all my watchers who have been very supportive to me all these times, I wish I could respond to each and every one of your comments, faves, watches, notes, everything. I just want you to know that your support means a lot to me.

The past month has been really hectic, a lot of things has been happening to me and my family, good and bad. I can't really explain it in detail here, but it's been quite tough on us and I'm just praying to God that it will all be over soon. I've also just graduated from High School (yay) and still on holiday. I'm about to take my IELTS test for university which I will be attending in Sydney on September, majoring in Design in College, and later on Animation in University. I am extremely nervous and excited. I feel like I'm not mature enough to leave my hometown and live on my own, but at the same time I'm extremely excited because I'll be studying animation.

On another note, do you guys remember me saying that I will be doing a collaboration with my sister bon2410 for a dystopian/sci-fi story called Horizon? Well, it's moving forward now! We've laid down some of the story concepts and also some character developments and environments which I haven't got time to actually post here. We're working hard on it, and hoping to post some chapters and illustrations online soon. We were thinking of just posting it just here on DA, but then I got an idea to make a separate blog for it, either in Tumblr or Blogspot. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in actually reading it?

Oh and I've also gotten myself a Wreck This Journal, and I gotta say it's really addicting. I might post some pages here on my DA if you guys would like to see.

Till next time. :D

I can't really pinpoint an exact opinion about this subject because I'm still confused about it myself. But I do know that people have been debating about this topic for a long time, whether traced/copied art can be considered as art theft or not.

I had a couple of experiences myself with copied or repainted art here on DA. The first one was when some deviant took my Zuko drawing, and slapped on the text "GLEE" because he/she said his pose looks amusing, with his palm upfront and making an "L" shape, then he/she reposted it on his/her account. I was quite offended, because  he/she didn't even ask permission, and was making fun of my drawing because of the weird pose. The second was when another deviant took my Percabeth painting, and repainted it sloppily on paint. A couple of my watchers notified me and DA or her took down the drawing not long after.

It's a different case if someone referenced off my art, or even traced it if it's only intended for practice, I'm fine with that. I also practiced drawing by tracing Manga comic books when I was a kid. But I don't think it's very appropriate to post your traced art online if you claim it as entirely yours (not giving any credit to the real owner). Tracing can be a very good way to start learning how to draw, even though referencing is better in my opinion, people has different ways to learn.

I don't really know DA's policy for traced art. Is it allowed?

Another thing is when someone copies off your art, but changes a couple of things, can that be considered as art theft or tracing? What are your thoughts?

Hey guys, I'm writing this journal to say thank you to Birdynum-num for suggesting my deviation and to Lyrianna for giving my deviation Prophecy of 7 a Daily Deviation. I'm really really grateful and I just want you guys to know that I appreciate it so much.

Prophecy of 7 by YoriNarpati

Also, I have to tell you guys that I will probably be on hiatus for the next 2-3 months. I'll be graduating high school shortly, so I will be facing lots of tests and exams. The schedule is packed like crazy, and basically it's just not possible for me to draw anything right now. For my commissioners, I want to apologize one more time for the delay. As you can see I haven't posted anything in the past month. I'm still working on them on my free time, which I don't have very much. If you must know, I'm having 2 exams a day for the next week and more are coming soon. So I'm hoping you guys will understand. I'll probably just post some sketches if possible on my tumblr. I miss drawing so much.

I love drawing, it's my hobby and my passion. It's my way of expressing emotions that I cannot express with words or action. It's my way to cheer myself up from a horrible day, or to just simply make me happy by drawing what I like.

But there are times when I get frustrated with it. I'm never satisfied with my work. Even if I had been working on it for a week, I will always feel that it's not good enough. If I do feel satisfied with it, the feeling isn't long lasting. After a while I'll eventually find the flaws in that piece and condemn myself again for being incapable of creating a decent piece of work. I'll always go after perfection, but I know that's not possible, even with practice, and hard work. I know that even the greatest artists will always want to be better. It's a never-ending cycle, a journey without a finish line, striving for something that could never be achieved that is perfection. This is why I have been storing most of my deviations in my gallery, and also why I haven't been posting so much lately. I just feel ashamed of my work, and I don't feel like I have anything worth uploading. I feel miserable, and it's stupid because it's over nothing. But I can't help but feel this way for weeks now.

I feel like if I don't step up my game and better myself in the next few months before starting college, there's no way I'll be successful in an art related major let alone a career. I have such a long way to go, and there's not enough time to train and improve. And the most ridiculous thing is, this is what makes me even more afraid to create, and try something new. I just feel stuck, and I want to give up. The same lines keeps repeating in my head, "How are you going to compare to other young and better artists out there? You're not good enough, you should go for something else instead. You won't be able to handle the pressure."

I really don't know what to do at the moment. The only thing I enjoy doing in life, I can't even enjoy anymore. I feel like I'm wasting time by not drawing. It's holiday now because I have finished my exams, I have a month of holiday to draw and paint, before I have to start school again and won't have any more spare time. Because from January until April my schedule will be even more packed than this year. Filled with try outs, school tests, national tests, almost everyday of the week. I even have to go to school in the weekends for extra classes.

I know this is ridiculous, maybe some of you guys are even scoffing at this post, but I really need help. I feel stupid, and just miserable all around. Maybe I'm just hit with a major art block, but when you have art block at least you still want to create, but you just don't have any good ideas. In my case, I don't even want to draw. And this is extremely weird for me.

EDIT: Hey guys, I just want to thank you for all the advice you've written in the comments below. I really really appreciate the support here, it's really the only thing that makes me want to go on. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only person experiencing these kinds of feelings every once in a while. I will try my best to pick myself back up, and act rather than just sulk and do nothing.

I was browsing through YouTube and I found a video, that talks about these exact problems. If you are experiencing the same things right now, give it a look. It made me feel a lot better.

About this F.A.Q.

Hi everybody. First off I just want to say that I am very grateful for all of your support here on DeviantART, for watching me, adding my works to your favourites, commenting, criticizing my work, it means a lot to me. All the support you guys gave me really makes me feel appreciated as an artist, and it makes me want to develop my skill even more. So I thank you all for that.

I really wish I can respond to every single comment and every single question you guys write to me, but I have to be honest that it can get a bit of a handful. Especially with my tight school schedules, assignments, daily tests, and courses that I have to go to everyday. I barely have time to draw, and responding to questions are even harder. But I just want to assure you guys that I do read all comments and is absolutely grateful for them. I do realize that most of the questions you send me are similar, so that is why I decided to write this F.A.Q.

So please, read this F.A.Q first before asking me a question. But if you still have questions for me, just send me a note here on DA. I'll try my best to answer them.

:bulletblack:About me.
My full name is Yori Elita Narpati, I am currently 18 years old and I will be attending college at UTS Insearch Sydney, Australia starting this September 2013 majoring in Design (Visual Communication). My hometown is Jakarta, Indonesia, my native language is Bahasa Indonesia and my second language is English.

:bulletblack:How did you start drawing?
Drawing is my hobby and my passion. Like most artists, I've liked drawing since I was a very little. Back then I only did very simple doodles and sketches. My mom majored in Interior Design when she was in University, and my grandfather likes drawing, so I guess that's where I get my passion from.

My sister, bon2410 is actually one of my main inspiration for starting drawing. She used to make comics when we were little, looking at her being able to draw, makes me want to be able to draw too. So I started doing very simple cartoon sketches with pencils back then.

Since my mom knows I like drawing, she bought me lots and lots of colored pencils and paper so I won't draw on walls. But she had never enrolled me in any art courses. So I pretty much tried to figure out drawing by myself. Later on in elementary school, me and my sister tried taking oil painting lessons,  but it didn't work out too well because we couldn't stand the smell of the paint. So after a few months, we stopped. I didn't get to learn much from it, so it was pretty much useless.

Nearing the end of elementary school, I started liking Manga and tried pursuing that style instead of cartoons, I bought some Manga tutorial books, and it helped with my anatomy a bit. When I entered middle school I stopped drawing manga, and actually went more into photo editing with Photoshop, I also liked doing graffiti and sometimes doing realism portraits with pencils. I jumped styles a lot in Middle School, nearing the end of middle school my style changed back again to American styled cartoons.

:bulletblack:How did you start doing digital art?
I think the most major turning point in my Art evolvement is in 2010 when I started doing digital art. I saw some speed painting videos on YouTube back in 2009 and I was amazed, since then I've always wanted to do digital. I started out by using the mouse and pen tool on Photoshop, but it was really hard and it took forever to make one piece of artwork. So I begged my mom for a tablet, and finally got a Wacom Intuos 4 in June 2010. It was a struggle at first, because I knew nothing about digital art, but I tried looking for various online tutorials and experimented on my own until I found a technique that suits me best. I forced myself to draw or paint something at least twice a week until now. I think the most important thing is not being afraid to make mistakes, and practicing a lot.

:bulletblack:What program and tablet do you use to draw?
I think this is the most frequent question I get, even though I always write it on the bottom of my artist comment. I used to use Adobe Photoshop CS2 back when I was in middle school, and I only used it to edit photos. I changed to Adobe Photoshop CS4, then Photoshop Elements 6, and now I use Adobe Photoshop CS5. For the tablet I use Wacom Intuos 4. On my iPad I use Sketchbook Pro and Brushes to paint. But I don't use it so often now since it's kinda hard to paint on iPads. There are other applications that are good for painting like SAI or Corel Draw. I honestly don't know the differences between these applications, and I don't know if some are better than others. It's just that I'm comfortable with using Photoshop because I've been using it for quite a long time, and I find it quite simple to use.

:bulletblack:What brushes do you use on Photoshop?
I use standard brushes from photoshop, I only modify them a little bit. Sometimes I download custom brushes from Deviantart, but I don't use them as often.

:bulletblack:How did you develop your style?
To be honest, I don't even know if I have a certain "style". My style is sometimes cartoony, and also realistic. I guess I developed this style from jumping styles a lot. I already said that I used to do Manga, realism, and also American cartoons. I also like to look at other artists here on DeviantART, and mixing their styles together.

:bulletblack:What is your inspiration?
I mostly draw fan art, so I have to say my inspiration is anything I like at that moment. Whether it's a TV show, a novel, a movie, or anything that I find interesting.

:bulletblack:Do you use references?
Yes I do use references sometimes, especially when I am doing realism portraits. I am very bad at doing movement and anatomy, so using references for those helps a lot. But usually when I'm drawing cartoon characters I don't use much reference. I use it the first time I'm drawing that character, but after I've memorized how he/she looks, I just try to recall it from my mind.

:bulletblack:How much time do you usually spend on a piece?
It varies a lot. It depends on how complicated that piece is. If it's just a sketch, it'll probably take me 10-15 minutes. If it's a painting, it can take me from an hour to a week. Once again depends on how complicated and detailed that piece is. I usually paint at least 2-3 times a week depends on how tight my schedule is. From 3-5 hours a day.

:bulletblack:Do you take commissions?
Yes I do. You should check my art status in my deviant ID first before noting me.

:bulletblack:Do you do requests?
Not anymore.

:bulletblack:Do you do kiribans?
Wait for an announcement on my journal.

:bulletblack:Do you do collaborations?
I do collaborations, but I don't do it with everyone who asks me. I'll only do it with close friends and it also depends on his/her skills, I would want to divide the work equally, I'm sorry.

:bulletblack:Do you do trades?
Not anymore.

:bulletblack:Can I repost your drawings elsewhere?
No you can't.

:bulletblack:Can I edit your work?
No, please don't do that.

:bulletblack:Can I color you sketches?
Yes you can, but please credit me and link it back to me.

:bulletblack:Can I use your work as wallpaper or reference?
Feel free to do this. But if you do use it as reference, linking it back would be much appreciated.

:bulletblack:What are your plans for the future?
I would really love to work for major animation companies like Disney, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon as an animator or a concept artist. Other than that, I would also like to be an novel illustrator or a freelance designer.

:bulletblack:Can I find you on other sites?
Yes, I have a tumblr for my sketches and doodles. Livestream for live drawing, and youtube for speed painting videos. There are links on my DeviantART ID.

I'll be adding this as I go along. If there are more necessary questions that I have to add, I'll add it to my F.A.Q. Thank you for taking your time to read this! If your question is still unanswered, don't hesitate to send me a note on DA. I'll try my best to answer it.

Someone stole my work

Thu Jul 5, 2012, 11:23 PM
I have been informed by a couple of deviants that this person Percabeth17 recolored and repost my work without permission.
This is her recolor :thumb300202697:, and this is my drawing

She has also recolored some other drawings from other artists.
I have reported her, and some deviants have also reported her. But she refuses to take down the recolored drawings. It truly is upsetting, and disrespectful to the artists. I would really appreciate it if you guys would help me out and report her so DA will take those down. Thank you.

Hi guys! I'm sorry I haven't updated my journal in a while. In the past month, I've been really busy with school assignments and exams. I didn't have enough sleep, and I even almost got sick. I'm really happy that I'm done now though.

So anyway, as some of you might have noticed I have just recently become more active in Tumblr. This actually happened a few weeks ago and I've written about it in my tumblr, but I just thought I would share it here in DeviantArt too.

If some of you remembered I did a a sketch of older Aang, which can be seen in a sketchdump I posted on my gallery, Joaquim Dos Santos the director of Legend Of Korra reblogged my sketch in his tumblr, 2-Cents! He said
"I thought this was well done. Really captures a good older Aang vibe!"

I was totally mind blown and I couldn't believe it.

Another one was my Tahnorra sketch dump, Sifu Kisu the fighting instructor and consultant for the Avatar franchise also reblogged that on his tumblr, Sifu-Kisu.

Even though these are just little things, I'm really happy that the Legend Of Korra staff have at least noticed some of my artwork, so I'm just really thankful and honored! I still couldn't believe it myself!

On another topic, last Saturday I joined an art competition with the theme of The Bravest Person In Your Life. I think there was about 150-200 contestants, sadly I lost. It's okay though because I had a great time. The competition was held by The One Academy University of Malaysia, in conjunction with the release of the movie Disney/Pixar Brave. And the event overall was really fun. After the competition we even got to watch a digital painting demo by this wonderful artist :iconkidchan:. And I even got her to sign my book!

Last but not least, I just wanted to say thank you once again to all of you for all the support. For faving, commenting, and giving critiques to my work. It just means the world to me to be appreciated as an artist here in DeviantArt. You motivate me to do even better and improve with my work. I love you guys! I really want to be able to thank and reply to all of you one by one, but I just don't have the time to sit down and reply to every one of them. But I do read all of the comments and all the notes you sent me, I'll do the best to reply in the future.

Till next time! Have a great holiday everyone!

I'm quite certain that most of you have heard about this upcoming Nickelodeon show, The Legend of Korra. Well, because I am a big fan of the previous show, Avatar : The Last Airbender, me and my sister bon2410 have decided to make a group dedicated to the show.

So, if you are a fan, please be sure to check it out, and maybe become one of our members! We need all the support we can get!

Okay, so I just got a Daily Deviation? I mean, seriously? I practically spazzed in front of my computer screen for a few seconds and ran across the room to call my sister.

I really couldn't believe it, because I've never thought that my work is good enough to receive a Daily Deviation and I opened it in the middle of the night in a very sleepy state, so maybe I was half awake or something.

I just wanted to say that I am just very thankful. First of all to God and of course to all the deviants that have been supporting me here. I want to thank especially AssClownFish for suggesting my work. And TommyGK for featuring I love him, father. It is such an honour and I will always remember this moment. Thank you once again for all the support.
